Botanic Gardens Sydney
The
Royal Botanic Gardens established in 1816 is the earliest cultivated
land on the Australian continent. It is Australia's oldest scientific
institution and one of the world's leading botanic gardens.
A
walk through this oasis of tranquillity in the heart of Sydney will
relax and refresh you. The gardens are located across the water's
edge from the Sydney Opera House, and fill an area of land between
the harbor and the eastern part of the central business district.
This large chunk of land contains a variety of trees providing shade,
and an excellent place to escape the hustle and bustle of the busy
city.
The gardens have more than one million specimens. A walkway stretches
around gardens and the harbourfront showcasing a variety of statues
and sculptures mixed with plants and animals. There are a varity
of trees including some interesting fig and eucalyptus, as well
as a wide variety of gardens including; tropical gardens, rose gardens,
herb gardens, Oriental Gardens, and a few water gardens (ponds)
including a lotus pond. Some of the animals include flying foxes,
golden whistler, common koel and channel-billed cuckoos, owels,
possums, frogs, lizards, snakes and spiders.
Special attractions include magnificent views of the Harbor, Harbor
Bridge, Opera House and city skyline as well as Sydney Tropical
Center comprising the Arc and Pyramid Glasshouses displaying plants
of the worlds tropical zones.
